First up, let’s narrow down the search. You decide to buy the rug from Amazon. And now, in search, we will give lolloy rugs loloy. It’s a rough company name, a bit tough to say, so from now on I will just call it Laloy.

Here we have to enter the name of this rogue in the search, and this will take us one step down in the search. Then next funnel down where we will start searching with interior designers.

So, then we’ll narrow down our choices even further by looking at these Degeneres rugs. First, I will select the color, then I’ll select the size, and then bang! your perfect rug is ready. And then we will design the entire room with that rug as the center.

So first up, Amber Lewis Billy Rug in Ink and Salmon.

I really like this rug because I like the pattern and I also like its richness. But I still think it could use a lot of neutral colors around it. This will really ground the space, especially for a light, bright, and airy house like mine.

So, I really like this rug. This is my top choice from the collection of Amber Lewis. This is Billy in Ink and Salmon.

And many people think so, because it’s in low stock in some sizes. I’m sure they will restock it, because it’s so popular.

However, if you’re looking for a neutral rug right now, I would like to give you a second option from the Chris Loves Julia line. This is also a neutral color, and I noticed that there is more stock available. It is poly in natural and beige.

So, this is another neutral rug from the Chris Loves Julia collection, and it would work well in a lot of rooms. I will do an encore before you order a sample, because it might look a little yellowy beige, when what we want is a cool beige, meaning a brighter, whiter beige.

But this is another very comfortable to style rug, very neutral. With this poly rug, you are less likely to make a real mistake in your space. It is definitely a great option.

This is from his Colton collection, and there are many different designs in this collection that I really like. I really like the ivory and black color scheme. It reminds me of a lot of the custom rugs I have in my home.

I also really like this natural and brown color. Angela Rose used it in her dining room, and it just looks great. It’s a great neutral option, but it also has a little bit of sass.

The thing about being an interior designer is that the whole world is open to you. You can choose any palette and then bring all your textiles accordingly.

Just like when an artist goes to create a painting, the whole world is at his fingertips, because he has the talent with which he can portray it on the canvas.

But for homeowners like me, I like a jumping off point. I like paint by numbers type options, so I don’t make mistakes.

And the way I look at it is the colors and the artwork can define a palette.

I’m talking about rugs and artwork rather than paint colors because when most people start decorating a room, they go straight to the paint deck. And that’s a mistake.

Because there are so many paint color options, you can choose any color that matches the room later. You actually want to start with an artwork or rug because there are so few options that you’ll want to bring into the room and enjoy.

Finding the Right Undertone

Wait a minute, let me show you.

Let’s say we have this rug that we’re going to decorate based on. This is our paint-by-numbers. And what we’re going to do is you see, there’s a white color here, but it’s not bright white; it’s more like oatmeal white.

Now, just like you find the similarities between the pieces of a puzzle, you need to find that undertone here. You need to look closely at the fine details inside the product so that you can bring other things into the house that match them.

For example, here I have a pillow that’s the color of oatmeal. It’s not bright white, but it’s still in the same color palette as the rug. Then I can add a brown pillow. This will bring out the brown undertone in the rug.

This is how you create a neutral color palette. First, find the color and undertone of the rug, then add pillows, textiles, and other elements of the room that coordinate with those colors.

How to Style Vintage-Inspired Rugs

Another thing I want you to know about vintage and vintage-inspired rugs is that their patterns are usually quite busy and detailed, so everything else around them should be kept relatively simple, quiet, light, and bright.

And if the rug is a bit darker, it would be better to keep the rest of the room in lighter colors.

That’s how these rugs actually work to ground or balance the entire space.

Another tip I would like to give is to buy a sample rug.

They usually give you an 18×18 inch sample. However, I personally prefer a 2×3 size sample.

I prefer to buy a whole large rug because I can lay it out in different areas of the room or tuck it under furniture to see how it will look in the room.

But if you are taking a sample as big as I am, there is one thing to keep in mind: You will need to take this rug sample to HomeGoods, Target, Marshalls, and maybe even Pottery Barn.

Yes, you might feel a little weird walking around with a big rug at Marshalls or HomeGoods! But trust me, it will be the right thing to do in the end.

Because you can then take your favorite rug to the store and choose pillows, décor, and other items that really go with it.

This will greatly reduce the hassle of going back to the store, returning items, or buying the wrong item.

So don’t be afraid to be the weird person bringing a large rug sample to the store. Lay it out on the floor, sit comfortably, put a pillow on it, and try to match the rug with the items you want to bring into your home.

This way, you’re not just matching things with the rug; rather, you’re starting to create the design of your entire room around the rug.

The Biggest Problem With Rugs on Amazon: They Are Too Thin

This brings me to my final point, and my biggest problem with these rugs is how thin they are.

The thing is, if I could fold this rug and put it in my huge mom’s bag and go shopping at HomeGoods, I think the rug is probably a little too thin!

However, in some cases, a thin rug can work perfectly.

For example, in an office, where rolling or sliding chairs are used, a thin rug can be good. Again, a thin rug can work in a dining area, because there we move different chairs back and forth repeatedly.

But in places like bedrooms or living rooms, where we want a more cozy and comfortable environment, this type of thin rug seems a little too thin to me.

How to Make a Thin Rug More Comfortable

So how do I solve this problem?

I use a rug pad under the rug. But not just any rug pad. The rug pad I’m talking about is a really thick and sturdy type of rug pad. It’s available at Home Depot or Lowe’s. It looks a lot like the sole of a Nike sneaker, a little crisscross or textured, and it’s really thick.

Placing it under a thin rug adds bounce and cushioning to the rug, making it much more comfortable to sit on the floor and play with your kids. Even when you get out of bed in the morning and step barefoot on the rug, you get a soft, comfortable feeling. That is, if you use a good quality thick rug pad under a very thin rug, you will get that overall cozy feel that is not possible with just a thin rug.
